Montauk Building

The 10-story Montauk Block, also designed by Burnham and Root, once stood here on West Monroe Street. Today it is remembered as the first building ever to be called a "skyscraper." When it was completed in 1882, the Montauk was the tallest building in Chicago, but it was soon surpassed by the 13-story Royal Insurance Building in 1885. The Montauk was demolished in 1902.
