On July 5, 1955, a group of University of Chicago students first performed as "The Compass", a theater group that presented improvised scenes as entertainment. The Compass eventually gave birth to Second City, and therefore is known as the origin of improv theater. Tonight, as part of the Chicago Improv Festival, a group of students from the University Theatre will perform the original Compass show. The performance happens tonight at 8:00 at the Frances X. Kinahan Third Floor Theater on the university campus (5706 S. University). Tickets are $10, and can be ordered in advance by calling (773) 702-3414.
The Danny’s Reading Series (complete with air conditioning) special feature tonight, at 7:30pm, will be Irish composer and vocalist Jennifer Walshe, poet Parker Smathers and Industry of the Ordinary featuring local artists Adam Brooks and Mathew Wilson. Danny’s Tavern is located at 1951 W. Dickens (in the Bucktown neighborhood, near the intersection of Armitage and Damen) 773.489.6457. This event is 21 and over, please bring ID.
