Rotofugi features new works by local graffiti artist Peabe in a show called "Gorillas Ate My Eggs!" in the store's brand-new gallery space next door. DJ Genghiswon and special guests spin all night, and beer is provided by Goose Island beer. Free, from 7pm to 11pm at 1953-55 W. Chicago Ave.
Master puppeteer Blair Thomas presents The Ox-HerderTale, a simple story about a man searching for a bull that he must capture, tame and ride home, told with full-size bunraku puppets, masked actors, stilt walkers and shadow puppetry. Composer Michael Zerang performs sound and music, accompanied by fellow percussionist Hamid Drake. This evening at 8pm, at the Zen Buddhist Temple (1710 W. Cornelia). Everybody's favorite mag for tearing down the pig system, Lumpen Magazine, turns 15 this year, and they're having a celebration tonight at Heaven Gallery. The fun begins at 8:00 PM, admission is $10, and you'll get food, drink, live entertainment by local bands (including Water Babies, Seoul Man Gene Lee, Warhammer 48K, Brotman & Short, and others) and loads of other stuff that I forgot. If you haven't heard about Lollapalooza's return to Chicago this weekend, then you've likely been under a rock. The now three-day festival will feature over 130 bands on 8 stages, improv groups, freaky clowns, and artists. Music highlights include Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kanye West, Common, The Flaming Lips, Ween, Wilco, and, yeah, over a hundred others you'll likely want to catch. The MCA (220 E Chicago Ave) presents a water-themed First Friday, featuring a bathing suit fashion show, "skinny dip" martinis, and music by DJ Daniel Mnookin. Inspired by WaterShed, an interactive sculpture designed by students at the Art Institute that flashes and emits ambient sounds when you ask it for some agua. This evening from 6-10pm.
