Tonight at 7:30 Women and Children First welcomes Michelle Sewell, editor of Growing Up Girl: An Anthology of Voices from Marginalized Spaces, a collection of short stories, poems and essays on the transition from girl to woman. Joining Sewell will be several local contributors to the anthology -- Wendy Altschuler, Jennifer Karmin, Janet Vega, Latiffany Wright and Jewel Sophia Younge.
The Music Box Theatre will be screening a program of short films nominated for this year's Academy Awards. The program includes both the animated and live-action films, so this is your chance to see two Oscar-winning films in one screening! The Gene Siskel Film Center continues a retrospective of the work of artist and filmmaker Matthew Barney with a screening of his recent film Drawing Restraint 9. What you can expect to see: Björk; a whaling vessel; and 45,000 pounds of liquefied Vaseline. Tonight's screening is at 6:00 PM, and the film will also be shown on Saturday the 17th at 5:30 PM, and Wednesday the 21st at 8:00 PM. Top-shelf British groove maestro DJ Mr. Scruff makes a return engagement at Smart Bar tonight, where he'll be spinning a marathon set from opening 'til closing time.
