Chicago's 18-year-old slam poetry tradition continues this evening, as it does every Sunday at the Green Mill, with founder Marc Kelly Smith, an open mic, a special guest and a competition. The event starts at 7pm with a $6 cover at the Green Mill, 4802 North Broadway.
Legendary documentary filmmaker Frederick Wiseman appears at the Portage Theater (4050 N. Milwaukee) to introduce screenings of two of his most famous works: Titicut Follies (the 1967 film depicting the conditions inside a hospital for the criminally insane) and Public Housing (his 1997 look at Chicago's Ida B. Wells complex). The screenings are at 5pm (for Titicut Follies) and 7pm (for Public Housing). Tickets are $10 or $5 with student ID.
Loney Dear (who just toured with Andrew Bird) visit Chicago all the way from Sweden tonight at Schubas (3159 N. Southport). You may have heard their folk pop on Grey's Anatomy. The band's new album, Dear John, will was released in January via Polyvinyl Record Co. Tickets are $10. Show starts at 9pm. 21+
Custom House is holding a Soup Off cooking contest this Sunday (500 S. Dearborn). For $15, guests will sample and judge soups made by a bevy of local chefs such as Shawn McClain (of Spring) and Carrie Nahabedian (of Naha). A judge's panel will decide the winner with the audience's help. Event runs 1pm-4pm and is a benefit for the Food Depository.
